Commissioned by Calmus Ensemble for Mosaik, their project of musical statements on the coronavirus pandemic. The ensemble had previously sung There is no rose in their Christmas concert at the Lincoln Center, and reached out to request a ‘musical postcard’ from the pandemic; the piece that answered was written to be performed either as a brief musical note or as a substantial work, lasting anywhere from one minute to ten. It expresses a quiet anger at the handling of the pandemic, juxtaposing the monotonous language of statistics and mortality rates with the ancient text Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
If you are performing this work, do let Andrew know so it can be added to the map.
